commuters are feeling cool this morning if you are heading towards the dublin interchange no issues on the roads in fact all clear on our sensors through the altamont pass and the livermore valley. you can see that drive time still holding steady about 14 minutes between those wind turbines and the dublin interchange. all right. here's a live look now at the san mateo bridge. also looking good this morning out of hayward, the right side of your screen where all the traffic is that's the commute direction. and you can see a few more cars on the road heading over the flat section approaching the high-rise. so this accident should be clearing. they have had a tow crew out there since 4:20 this morning. had northbound 101 to northbound 280. there was a solo spinout on that connector ramp in san jose. northbound and southbound 880 quiet this morning heading into downtown oakland from hayward and at the bay bridge looks like our slight delays in those far left cash lanes have completely cleared out and now there's no problem and no metering lights as well heading into san francisco. also the roadwork should be cleared from the incline out to

the tunnel. that's your latest "kcbs traffic." back to you guys. >> thank you. time now 5:02. two people have some gruesome looking injuries after being attacked by dogs in the east bay. kpix 5's cate caugiran joins us now in the newsroom with details on the dogs that attacked the victims right near their homes. cate. >> reporter: this morning, those two dogs are in the custody of contra costa county animal services after sending two people to the hospital and tearing one neighborhood apart. this whole thing happened yesterday morning. two dogs a pit bull and labrador retriever got loose and went on a rampage on hudson drive. at the same time, reed was walking his dogs when he said the two tried to attack his dogs. brentwood police officers say these dogs caused the injuries that you see on the screen. the dogs also went after another woman who was just walking out her front door to walk her dog. that woman needed stitches on her leg -- on her face, leg and possibly now has a broken toe. we were there when one of the

victims got into a confrontation. >> see what they did to my wife? >> you know what? it's not a pit bull! >> i don't know what it is! i just got home myself. >> it's a mastiff sharpei. >> i don't care what it is. >> you don't need to get in my face. you don't know what it's doing to my dog. those are like my grand doggies. >> reporter: brentwood police and animal services found the dogs. the pair ran through a neighborhood prompting a preschool to "shelter in place." officers say they also had to use a taser to subdue the pit bull. now, we know they belong to a neighbor in that area who is cooperating with police and police believe the dogs escaped from their backyard. live in the newsroom, frank, back to you. >> a question. do we no what happened to the dogs? >> -- do we know what happened to the dogs? >> they are going to be held for a 10-day quarantine and animal services will investigate. >> cate caugiran live in the newsroom, thank you. right now, firefighters in southern california have a wildfire about halfway contained. it's burning east of los

angeles in the foothills of the san bernardino national forest. the fire started wednesday and forced more than 1,000 residents to evacuate. it burned about 1600 acres of brush. winds are expected to be relatively low today in the range of 5 to 10 miles an hour. anne makovec joins us live from oakland now with yet another twist in the controversy surrounding l.a. clipper owner donald sterling. >> reporter: here outside oracle arena which calmed down significantly last night weather the warriors beat the clippers, it was a tight game, 99-100. but a lot of the talk here was about the clippers owner donald sterling. here he is leaving a beverly hills restaurant last night. his first public appearance since he was caught on tape making racist comments. he had no response to reporter questions about whether or not he will sell the clippers just hours after an nba commission voted to pursue terminating his ownership. the other big news of the day sterling is said to have

prostate cancer. fans here at oracle expressed sympathy for that. >> well, you know, what went on it's emotional but, you know, i feel for the guy getting cancer, you know, we're all people at the end of the day. >> it's never good when anybody has cancer. so it's really unfortunate but i hope he recovers from cancer and at the same time realizes that what he said was and his actions maybe weren't the best. >> reporter: now, sterling himself wasn't at the game last night because earlier this week the nba permanently banned sterling from all league activities. his team though the clippers will host the warriors tomorrow night for game 7 of this series that is at 7:30. live at oracle arena, anne makovec, kpix 5. >> that is a winner-take-all. thank you. the president of the naacp l.a. chapter has resigned over a decision to give sterling an award for promoting civil rights. leon jenkins reversed that decision shortly after the

scandal broke out last week but critics say he should not have made the decision in the first place due to allegations of discrimination in sterling's past. federal investigators are looking into uc-berkeley and 54 other schools for the way they handled reports of sexual assaults on campus. the title ix investigations also covered such prestigious universities as princeton, vanderbilt and harvard. the department of education is telling the schools they must either address all issues or lose federal funding. the federal government estimates one out of every five college women will be sexually assaulted before graduation. >> the president and the vice president both strongly called for greater transparency and a movement across the country for us to change campus culture so that we are making sure that all of our students are safe. >> uc-berkeley and the other universities say they are fully cooperating with the investigation and are committed to making improvements.

5:06. a lawsuit is looking to put the brakes on tech shuttle buses in san francisco. they have sparked protests in recent months over soaring housing costs. the suit by seiu and community groups targets the use of muni bus stops saying it's illegal and wants the city to put an end to the program. today officials from three countries held a joint news conference about their long- term plan to find the missing malaysia airlines plane. as cbs reporter susan mcginnis tells us, the meeting comes amid a new revelation that air traffic controllers wasted time the day the plane disappeared. reporter: nearly 8 weeks into the search for missing malaysia airlines flight 370, officials from malaysia, australia and france are vowing to press ahead to find the plane. >> i'm quietly confident that we are on the right track. >> reporter: while the aerial hunt was called off earlier this week, authorities plan to expand the under water hunt for the aircraft. australian officials, though,

patriots player aaron herna. he's charged in connection h a jailhouse fight there are new criminal charges against former new england patriots player aaron hernandez charged in connection with a jailhouse fight in february and with a threat against a jailhouse employee in november. a grand jury in massachusetts indicted him yesterday. hernandez is being held on first-degree murder and weapons charges for the death of odin lloyd last june. this week's rains and flood having taking their toll in parts of the united states. case in point, watch this incredible video out of maryland. >> oh, my god, ah!! >> how about that? just like that, big stretch of road in baltimore is just gone. it disappears along with all the cars that were parked on top. despite the screams, nobody was injured. >> the wall, the lights, the cars, everything parked on that side of the street, gone. >> the owners of some of those

cars say their insurance companies have told them they are out of luck because their policies don't cover this type of mishap, which of course doesn't happen very often. exclusively on kpix 5 this morning, the violence in the ukraine has continued to escalate and just a short time ago a cbs news producer was released after being taken hostage. >> aaron lyle joins us on the phone right now from ukraine. good morning, erin. >> reporter: good morning, frank and michelle. >> first of all, we just want to tell you we're glad you're okay! can you tell us what happened? >> reporter: sure. thank you. this morning, we were hearing reports that [ indiscernible ] was the site of a ukranian army, uhm, reaction this morning so we got if the car and drove up, like a normal day to try to get to slaviansk. we were stopped at a checkpoint and they said that they were either going to take us prisoner or let us through. they had to check with their commanders. they then drove us to another building. we sat in the car for a while and then they came on and put

blindfolds on us, rags on our faces that they wrapped around with clear tape that were bound pretty tightly. it was us, it was a crew from sky news and journalists from buzzfeed. then they drove us to an undisclosed location an hour away, it turned out to be some kind of factory warehouse and they pulled us out of the car and had us put our hands above our heads, pushed us against our wall, frisked us, took everything off us, separated the women in one room and the men in another. so i was with correspondent clarissa ward and female interpreter for buzzfeed and the men were in another room. >> you must have been scared out of your wits. i can't even imagine, what was that like and how long were you held and were they okay? did they treat you okay? >> reporter: i think any total it was only about 3 or 4 hours but it felt like a full day and there were some moments that were scary. >> reporter: they were asking

scary. >> they were rough with us at the beginning and tell us that everything was going to be okay. when you're blindfolded in a room where you don't know where you are it's hard to be encouraged by that. >> we report every day on what's going on out there. but you're seeing it firsthand. what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, i think it's hard -- it's hard in washington and in america to understand that what's happening here isn't -- they are not taking orders from russia. they are not taking orders from ukraine. these are local residents with uniforms and guns and they are doing things on their own. so when a deal is struck with ukraine and russia, it has no impact on the ground here. these residents are saying, nobody is negotiating with us so we are just protecting our own state. >> well, you tweeted shortly after your release, taken hostage by self-defense forces. what are self-defense forces? >> reporter: that's what they call themselves. they are the guys who are protecting [ indiscernible ] in the [ indiscernible ] region in

when this macarthur maze roadwork is clear. we finally got the "all clear" so westbound 580 to eastbound 80 is back open. that connector ramp has been open since 5 a.m. and a live look at 580 through the dublin interchange, everything looks great obviously no big delays yet through the livermore valley heading into pleasanton. that could change here shortly. but good to go for now. the san mateo bridge moving at the speed limit so far out of hayward. that's your latest "kcbs traffic." more on our foggy friday forecast. here's lawrence. nice to see the fog roll back in the heat wave ending. much cooler temperatures especially along the coastline and just inside the bay today still warm in the valleys. the fog has made a return, the sea breeze will pick up throughout the day. much cooler temperatures in some spots especially approaching the coastline. yesterday we topped out at 92 in san jose. 78 in half moon bay. 89 in oakland. and 84 degrees in san francisco. today we are going to drop off a good 11 to 12 degrees outside

and around much of the sites you will see that sea breeze blowing and more fog is on the way for the weekend, too. in fact, it looks like a major cooldown toward the weekend. these temperatures as much as 20 to 25 degrees cooler as we head toward saturday and sunday. high pressure now sliding eastward. that fog and that sea breeze starting to roll in and that means we are in for cooler weather. around the state, 90s into the central valley. you will see about 84 degrees in yosemite. computer models picking up on some of that patchy fog and, well, it's going to try and clear out but i think it will linger near the coastline today and then really surge onshore later tonight into early tomorrow morning. so temperatures coming down today warm away from the immediate coastline, mid-80s into san jose but 60s along the coastline. 80s inland. then inside the bay you're looking at temperatures in the 60s and the 70s. next couple of days temperatures back to normal partly cloudy sunday night into monday with a slight chance of showers north of the golden gate bridge. but that sea breeze, that is going to feel very nice today after several hot days. >> good sleeping weather, too.

was confronted by one victim's husband. brentwood police officers say these dogs caused these injuries which led to this confrontation. >> see what at the did to my wife? >> you know what? it's not a pet bull. >> i don't know what it is. i just got home myself. >> it's a mastiff sharpei. >> i don't care what it is. >> you know what? you don't even get in my face. you don't know what it's doing to my daughter. those are like my granddoggies. >> reporter: it all began yesterday morning when two dogs got out of their yard and went on a rampage. >> i was walking my dogs and these giant dogs decided to make mine a snack. >> reporter: he put his dogs on top of a truck to try to fight off the other pair. >> one of the dogs went for my finger. i pushed him off. the other one didn't like that went to my leg, took my leg, took me down. >> reporter: then the dogs went after jeff wax's wife. >> they came and one grabbed bobby and the other one went

after her. so her instincts were to grab for her dog and try and save him. the other one was biting on her legs. >> reporter: she needed steps of on her face, leg and possibly has a broken toe. she needed stitches on her face, leg. the dogs were caught. >> trying to get out, they hit him with a taser. >> reporter: in the attacks tensions boiled over. >> my wife was coming out the front door to walk the dog and they attacked her and the dog! >> reporter: police were able to catch the two dogs but not before they ran through the neighborhood causing one preschool to shelter in place. officers tasered the pit bull to subdue him. cate caugiran, kpix 5. >> both dogs will be held for a 10-day rabies quarantine. in hawaii, the death of a woman from santa rosa is now

under investigation. 20-year-old patricia rabellizsa died in a zipline accident on maui. she was an employee at the company where the accident happened. she fell 150 feet into a deep gulch of the by the time crews got there, she had died. 5:33. temperatures dropping off around the bay area big time through the weekend. out the door we go. the fog moving back onshore as high pressure has weakened further to the east. that means we are going to see much cooler temperatures toward the beaches today only 60s there. 70s inside the bay. warm 80s in the valleys. 40s and 50s over the bay. by the afternoon the sea breeze will be picking up. 73 degrees comfortable into san francisco. but breezy. 84 in san jose. 87 in livermore. but along the coastline, about 66 degrees and cooler weather coming for the weekend.

cruising right along toward high street. at the bay bridge no sign of any metering lights yet but the delays are beginning to grow in the cash lanes mainly the left ones and slight delays in the far right ones but fastrak users are fine. that's your latest "kcbs traffic." frank, michelle, back to you guys. >> all right. thank you, elizabeth. developing news, sheriff's deputies are searching for a cal fire battalion chief who is suspected in the killing of his fiancee in southern sacramento county. cal fire says oroville fleming has been with the agency for 24 years. the family of sarah douglas said she was found dead yesterday morning in the home she shared with fleming. >> she was on a night out with her sister and her mom and she came home and according to her sister he was waiting for her. >> detectives say fleming was driving a cal fire truck but it was later found abandoned in elk grove. former concord police officer is expected to be arraigned on several criminal charges later today. matthew switzer is accused of

stealing prescription drugs from residents of a senior apartment complex in downtown concord while in uniform. a resident told police about switzer in february. they began an investigation arrested him last month. he resigned just a few days later. new details regarding the nba's effort to terminate donald sterling's ownership of the l.a. clippers. there are now reports he has cancer. anne makovec joins us live from oakland where the clippers and warriors were in a play-off game last night. >> reporter: yes. and the warriors won that game. things have calmed down significantly here at oracle since then but it was a 99-100 win. very hot game. but a lot of talk off the court was about the clippers owner, his racist comments and his latest battle, his health. reporter: l.a. clippers owner donald sterling was seen leaving an l.a. area restaurant this week amid reports he is battling serious health issues. espn reports the 80-year-old has been treated for prostate

cancer for an extended period of time. sterling is banned from the nba for life for making racist comments. clippers head coach doc rivers addressed the news after his team lost to the golden state warriors last night. >> i don't have a reaction to that. you know, uhm, i hope it's not true. >> reporter: nba team owners wasted no time launching a bid to oust sterling as team owner. according to the nba, a panel of 10 owners unanimously agreed to proceed, quote, as expedition. ly as possible. -- as expeditiously as possible. the nba commissioner fined him $2.5 million. there's been more fallout. leon jenkins the president of the naacp chapter in los angeles has resigned. jenkins' group was about to give sterling a lifetime achievements award before the comments surfaced. he resigned because of the negative exposure he caused for the naacp. neither sterling nor his lawyer have made any public comments since tuesday. live at oracle arena, anne makovec, kpix 5.

the warriors and clippers will play the 7th and deciding game in the series in los angeles tomorrow evening. most of the bay area demonstration rallies on may day were peaceful. hundreds turned out in san jose, oakland and san francisco. apparently the only arrests during may day protests happened in san francisco. a crowd blocked 16th and mission streets during the evening rush hour. you see it here. police eventually made a few arrests and the crowd finally dispersed. it began as an unusual art project. it may evolve into an even more peculiar business venture. >> yeah. it's a little strange but here we go. the so-called hook-up truck is about ready to roll through the streets of the bay area. as the name implies, it offers couples a unique place to have sex. a no tell motel on wheels. once the truck's owner starts charging people, the cost for the service could be between $75 and 150 bucks per half hour. if you are wondering, it is set to launch in oakland today.

>> strange. >> yeah. >> not right. the big numbers for wall street, here's the segue, on to business now, today are just in from the labor day department. >> jill wagner of cbsmoneywatch.com joins us now. good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning, frank and michelle. we definitely just got some good news when it comes to jobs. the labor department says that the u.s. economy added 288,000 jobs in april. that is a huge jump from march. the unemployment rate is now at 6.3%. that is the lowest rate since 2008. so definitely some good news when it companies to jobs. we'll see how the market reacts. yesterday the dow fell 21 points from wednesday's record high. the nasdaq gained 12 points. microsoft has issued a fix for that massive security gap on internet explorer. it allowed hackers to take complete control of a computer. microsoft says if you have automatic updates enabled you don't need to take any action. and it's also issuing the update to windows xx users

despite drop in support for the older operating system last month. we have two important car recalls to tell you about. honda is recalling 24,000 2014 odyssey minivans because the side airbags may not deploy during a crash. the company says that no crashes or injuries have been reported. another recall at general motors. the automaker is recalling more than 50,000 luxury suvs to fix a computer error that can delay acceleration for three or four seconds. now, this affects some cadillac srx suvs from 2013 and it is a separate issue from gm's massive recall over the faulty ignition switches. frank and michelle? >> you know, i think i'm going to like this one. i always forget my sunglasses and i guess there's a new high- tech way so you never leave them at home when you're taking off, huh? >> reporter: that's right. i'm definitely with you on that one. an australian tech company has butted a bluetooth chip in the glasses and it will send you a text message if you leave the

sunglasses behind. the bluetooth can be charged by solar power which i think is pretty cool. and the glasses will be available in six designs. they are expensive costing about $350. but frank and michelle, as you said if you are anything like me you lose your glasses a lot it could be worth. >> it needs to tell you where they are. >> that's true. >> reporter: as soon as you get about 20 feet away, that's when it sends you a text. >> good. >> reporter: hopefully there aren't too many places. >> mine end up at the bottom of a lak a lot! no! yes. see you later. room that you don't know where you're, it's hard to feel encouraged by that. >> lyall said the ordeal lasted about four hours. she said she and the others are going right back to work. a controversial pension cost-cutting measure is being delayed in san jose. measure b was approved by the voters nearly 4 years ago. kpix 5 reporter kiet do joins us now at san jose city hall to explain why implementation is being put off. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. employees were bracing for smaller paychecks this summer. they are now breathing easier now. measure b was set to go into effect on july 1 and they would have to pay more into their pensions. the judge delayed it by a year. that has labor unions claiming a small victory. voter passed measure b in 2010 to rein in skyrocketing pensions forcing the layoffs of police officers, firefighters, staff and closing fire

stations. chuck reed still defenses measure b saying it saved the city more than $20 million. >> cost savings are important to restoring services. our retirement costs continue to go up by millions of dollars this year and getting control over those skyrocketing costs is a key to putting our city on a good fiscal foundation. we have managed to reduce them somewhat with the savings that the voters approved. there's more we need to do. but we will wait until we finish with litigation before we can move ahead. >> it's not easy for any politician especially chuck reed to say i'm sorry but the city agreeing to not implement measure b is an overt admission that it's time for a new direction in san jose. >> reporter: the city still has the right to cut salaries and they have been. in response, police officers, firefighters and other employees left in droves to other cities. san jose then restored some of the pay to keep them from quitting. both sides continue to battle it out in court. it's unclear whether or not they will resolve these differences over measure b by next year's deadline.

"friday light." but i am told we have some unbelievable pictures of the city of tracy. >> we have more on the slow commute out of tracy on 205. it's a little "friday light." we have seen it a lot worse than this on 205 but it's still pretty heavy like usual at this time of the morning right now approaching mountain house parkway and looking through the altamont pass, that drive time from the altamont pass from those wind turbines out to the dublin interchange, right now about 19 minutes. so overall, we're looking okay on this friday morning commute. let's get a check of bart. we just spotted the latest tweet this bart alert right now on twitter. bart is now in recovery mode so hopefully this will kind of clear itself very shortly but in the meantime, we are still seeing five- to ten-minute delays on the san leandro line due to earlier equipment problems. they had some switching problems on the tracks. here's a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. still no delays in the middle lanes.

deadly avalanche on mount everest. his family was there to greet 68-year-old jim geiger as he arrived in sacramento. he was ready to climb mount everest april 16 when the avalanche killed 16 sherpas. >> i was there at base camp. it happened at 6:30 in the morning and heard the rumble and got the news about 7:00 that 12 people were lost. some missing and then all of a sudden went up to 16. very, very sad. >> geiger said it was frightening to see rescue teams removing the victims. he was hoping to become the oldest american to climb the mountain. a driver in florida faces a big fine for jamming cell phone signals. jason humphries admitted he used a device to scrambling cell phone tower signals for two years. the problem was tracked to his giant jammer on his suv. he said he wanted to stop drivers around him from talking
